The Little Treatment Doing Big Things






When I first approached in-clinic skin treatments I thought it would be the more invasive ones that would make a difference. Turns out, so do the less invasive ones! I am hooked on Laser Clinics Australia's 5-Step Microdermabrasion treatment. What I love most is its ability to be altered to target my main concerns on the day of my appointment; if I go in with particularly dry skin the treatment will be tailored to hydrate, if my skin is over sensitised my therapist will tailor the approach to reduce inflammation and calm my skin. 


I am often asked about what I do in conjunction with skin treatments to keep my skin glowing for as long as possible. 5-Step Microdermarasions last approximately one month so here's what I do to get the most out of them. 


1) Be gentle! 

While microdermabrasion has minimal downtime, removing all of the dull, aged cells leaves fresh skin that will be more sensitive. For the week following my treatments I use only gentle products that I know my skin responds to well. If you experience any redness or inflammation I would recommend investing in some Skinstitut Laser Aid. It is a healing and soothing gel based lotion, designed to be used following dermatological procedures. Skinstitut products are great for their affordability, and you can keep using this product after your dermatological procedures as a serum. 


2) Keep the skin clean! 

It is so tempting to run your fingers along your 'baby-bum' fresh skin, but please resist the temptation. The last thing you want to do is fill that skin with oil and dirt from your fingers. This is also not the time to miss your nightly cleanse. When you have taken away the layer of dead skin cells, environmental pollutants can penetrate the skin that much easier. 


3) Exfoliants!

My rule is to stay away from exfoliants for the first three weeks after a microdermabrasion. You don't want to cause any trauma to your fresh skin. I have moved away from abrasive exfoliants completely, and switched to a chemical exfoliant. I typically schedule a microdermabrasion every second month, and will use my favourite exfoliant twice in between sessions. 


4) Stay out of the sun!

I try to keep my skin away from the sun for a week after my treatments. As always, make sure you are applying sunscreen every day! 


5) Breaktouts, eek! 

It isn't uncommon to have some breakouts following a microdermabrasion treatment. I keep Dermalogica's Breakout Clearing Booster on hand to keep on top of any breakouts. While it is an active product with Salicylic Acid, I find it non drying and the Niacinamide actually works to support your skin's natural barrier. For the week following microdermabrasion I will use this as a spot treatment, after that it is gentle enough for all over!
