This Wednesday we are taking a look into the products that are arguably my number ones. If I was on a desert island, and only allowed to take one skincare product, it would be my favourite serum. Last week I spoke about moisturisers, and mentioned how they don't so much add additional moisture to the skin, rather, they lock in whatever you are putting underneath to really penetrate the skin - serum or oils! So, here goes - three serums from the luxe category and whether they are worth their price tag #jiworthitwednesday
Product: Advanced Night Repair: Synchronized Recovery Complex II
Brand: Estee Lauder
Price 30mls: $100
Self Life: 24months
Claims: Fights all key signs of ageing. Australian's #1 repair serum.
My Experience: This was the first serum I truely fell in love with, in fact, it is actually the product the spurred on my #questforglowingskin. For years I suffered from unbalanced and oil prone skin, I thought the answer to this was starving it of any moisture - how wrong I was! After working it into my every day skincare routine and seeing some real difference in my skin's brightness, elasticity, and hydration I decided perhaps having the skin I dreamed of was not so far out of reach. Now, more than a year later my skin is completely different; well balanced, markably less sensitive and prone to redness. I still reach for this serum most nights - and it is still the perfect addition to my skincare routine. Although this product is marketed as a night repair, I frequently apply it in in the mornings, it sits perfectly under make up! Actually, I have been known to use this as a 'highlighter' by dabbing on my cheek bones and cupids bow.
How Long Does it Last: I have had my current 50ml bottle for near 12months. I do mix my serums depending on how my skin is feeling, so I'd hazard a guess that I have used this three - four times a week over this 12month period, and it is only JUST coming to an end now. Huge pay-off, a little goes a long way.
Worth the Price: Absolutely! As I mentioned, this has been a long time fave - actually I wasn't sure anything would ever compare. I love that the serum leaves my skin feeling noticeably different; if I sleep in it, my skin always feels more plump with improved elasticity the next morning. Any product that is easy to use gets a tick from me! If you forget to apply this one in the evenings it sits well under make up, or, do as I do and add a drop to your moisturiser, or foundation.
Product: Advanced GénifiqueYouth Activating Serum
Price 30mls: $100
Self Life: 12months
Claims: Targets the 10 key signs of youthful-looking skin: texture, resiliency, elasticity, firmness,
sagginess, fine lines, wrinkles, radiance, even skin tone, clarity.
My Experience: I have only added this serum to my regime within the past three months, and I'm already hooked. When I began using the Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum , it reminded me of how I felt when first trying the Estee Lauder ANR. Easy delivery. Leaves my skin feeling cool and calm. This is another product I feel working instantly, a big test for me is waking up and feeling the firmness and softness of my skin after sleeping in the serum. Using this serum nightly I do notice my skin is more radiant than when I skip using a serum. I wear under make up and have no slip. Of the three, this is the serum I will typically reach for in the morning because it's consistency is slightly more thin than the ANR, and I find my make up sits ever-so-slightly better over this serum.
How Long Does it Last: I haven't worked my way through a bottle yet, and unfortunately being opaque I can't give you an indication. I'll update you when it runs out, to give you an idea I use a very similar amount of the Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum as I do when using the ANR so I would anticipate they will last a similar amount of time.
Worth the Price: Yes! This serum makes a lot of claims, and I think it does a great job in living up to them. Personally, I am looking for my skincare to deliver on half of these claims - and the Lancome Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum certainly does that.
Product: Ultracalming Serum Concentrate Sensitised Skin Antidote
Price 30mls: $62.65*
Self Life: 12months
Claims: Helps calm, restore and defend sensitised skin. Helps build skin's tolerance to ease discomfort of stressed, reactive skin while helping to minimise discomfort, burning and itching.
My Experience: I am consistently impressed by Dermalogica products and their ability to deliver exactly what they claim. This is the serum I reach for when my skin is feeling sensitive, and really needs some help to repair. Recently I have been off and on planes, and applying fresh make up more than once a day, these two things are a nightmare for my skin. As soon as I apply the Ultracalming Serum Concentrate Sensitised Skin Antidote I can see redness reduce, and an overall improvement in skin clarity.
How Long Does it Last: I haven't got through a bottle yet, having said this, I use it considerably less than the other two serums mentioned. The bottle is opaque, so I can't give you an indication, however I do find myself using slightly more product to cover the same area than the other two products mentioned.
Worth the Price: What I love about this serum is that it does exactly what it says. For anyone looking for a product that will work with their skin to boost its natural repair cycle - this is it!
*note this is product is sold in 40ml size - price converted for comparison
Pick of the three: Honestly, I find it almost impossible to choose. I interchange Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair: Synchronized Recovery Complex II and Lancome's Advanced GénifiqueYouth Activating Serum with one another as they perform in a very similar way. They are both beautiful to use and leave my skin plump and dewy. The Dermalogica Ultracalming Serum Concentrate Sensitised Skin Antidote dries matte, whereas the other two leave a dewy glow. If you think you will apply your serums I the morning, I would recommend the Dermalogica serum for anyone who craves a matte finish to their face. Personally I crave that dewy glow, so don't mind the finish of the other two serums.
When comparing the pay-off of the three, I would suggest the serums by Estee Lauder and Lancome will last slightly longer.
I use Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair: Synchronized Recovery Complex II and Lancome's Advanced GénifiqueYouth Activating Serum as my everyday serums, and save Dermalogica's Ultracalming Serum Concentrate Sensitised Skin Antidote for when my skin is under serious pressure.
